For the past 50 years the Coral Reef Ecology Lab has made great strides in developing methodology, establishing statewide monitoring programs, conducting revolutionary research on bleaching and ocean acidification, and incorporating ridge to reef concepts into research. We take a holistic approach to protecting and conserving Hawai‘i’s marine resources combining monitoring, research, outreach, and education to achieve our goals of a more sustainable ocean. We partner with federal, state and non-governmental organizations to assure Hawai‘i’s marine resources are preserved while upholding traditional Hawaiian values of kuleana (responsibility) , mālama (stewardship), laulima (working together), pono (correct path), and ho‘omau (commitment). We collaborate with researchers, educators, and community groups to provide them with the tools and information needed to advance towards sustainability.
